Obtaining various traffic violations like a DUI or not paying traffic fines can lead to your drivers license being suspended by the state. Many think that having your driving privileges revoked will automatically make it impossible to obtain an insurance policy on your car. This is not always the case though. However, it will be more difficult to get auto insurance, because not all insurance companies will grant a policy to a driver with a suspended license, and those that will may have certain criteria that you must meet. The ability for an auto insurance provider to insure a suspended motorists many times depends an individual state’s laws.

You May Be Required To Have Your License Reinstated Within An Allotted Period Of Time

In many states there are laws in effect that allow a driver with a suspended license to take out a car insurance policy, but they have to get their driver’s license reinstated within a certain period of time. A typical grace period offered by state law is forty-five days. If however, you are unable to obtain a valid drivers license within the allotted grace period the insurance company will immediately cancel your policy.

A very common situation that many drivers find themselves in is having their driver’s license suspend for being ticketed for driving without valid insurance. If this is the case the state will not allow you to get your driving privileges back until you obtain at least the state’s required minimum amount of car insurance coverage. ┬áBecause it would be impossible to get your license unsuspended before buying insurance, states and insurance companies will allow you to buy insurance with a suspended license in this case.

There are also some states and insurance companies that allow you to buy auto insurance with no special guidelines even when your license is suspended. To find out if you are able to buy auto insurance with a suspended license you will need to shop around different insurance companies. Doing your research can help you find the lowest premiums, but expect to have to pay more for your policy if you are buying it with a suspended license.
