Be Aware Of Driving Laws And Insurance Requirements When Abroad

When planning to drive a car or other vehicle when traveling abroad, it is important to make sure that you have the proper insurance. Oftentimes your US car insurance policy will not be effective in countries other than the US or Canada. The first step in buying car insurance for driving in foreign countries is to do research. Different countries have different driving laws and minimum insurance requirements if any at all.

It may be necessary for you to get an International Driving Permit before being legally able to drive in certain countries. This permit can be obtained in the US from the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance, and is valid in over 150 countries. Be aware that even if a country does not have a minimum car insurance requirement it is still a good idea to be properly covered. A good rule of thumb is to have the same amount of coverage on your foreign policy and your US policy.

You Could Be Covered Under Your Existing Policy

Before buying an additional car insurance policy for driving abroad research and understand the policy you already have. It is possible that your current car insurance policy will cover you while driving in foreign countries. Sometimes this coverage is only offered during certain dates, but may be available for no additional fees.

Purchasing Auto Insurance When Renting A Car

The easiest way to buy car insurance while renting a car abroad is to purchase temporary insurance from the rental agency. Depending on how long you are renting the car for this may be a cost effective way of being insured. Be sure to rent from a reputable agency and shop around for the lowest price.

If you are not renting the car or are planning on staying in the country for an extended period of time it is best to purchase an insurance policy from a third party. Oftentimes for an additional fee you can add a car insurance policy to your travelers insurance. It is important to know if you want to add a car insurance policy when buying travelers insurances because the premiums may vary significantly from company to company. Also, many major credit card companies offer car insurance coverage while traveling. This is an additional fee and even if your credit card company offers this service, not everybody may qualify. Contact you credit card companies to see if this is an option.
