What Are Multi Car Discounts?

Insurance companies will offer a multi car discount if you insure more than one car with them. This falls under a group rate so the more vehicles you insure with the same company, the bigger the discount. You can insure multiple vehicles with a single driver or multiple cars with multiple drivers.  How flexible the policy is with each vehicle depends on the insurance company.

Cars That Qualify For A Multi Car Discount

There are certain standards that all insurance companies have for allowing a driver to take advantage of the multi car discount. Both cars have to be insured with the same primary driver. So if you would need to, have your name on both cars insurance policies. The cars do not have to be the same type. For example, you could be eligible for the discount for a truck and a sedan. The cars do not have to be in the same condition, one could be an older car and one newer. They also must be “garaged” at the same place. This means that the cars have to have the same “storing” spot. This deters people who do not live together to try to scam the insurance companies. Because of this potential for fraud, insurance companies require that the main drivers listed on the policies have to be related. Some insurance companies are trying to catch up with the times and allow for unmarried couples residing at the same address.

Other Multi Vehicle Discounts

Many companies will offer their customers additional discounts for other types of vehicles, including boats, recreational vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and pretty much any other type of motorized vehicles. Be careful when shopping for a multi vehicle discount because not all insurance companies will insure recreational vehicles and other non-standard cars. Additionally, insurance companies that offer other types of insurance, i.e., home, life, health, will offer discounted bundles when you purchase more than one type of policy through them.
