What Is A Defensive Driver

Remember back when you were in driving school and your instructor tried to drill the importance of defensive driving into you skull? As it turns out, it really is important and it can make a big difference on your insurance premium rate. A defensive driver is someone who drives constantly aware of their surroundings and what other drivers are doing in relation to them ready to react when danger approaches. While this may seem like common sense, many drivers do not employ this method of driving. As a result many avoidable accidents happen. Defensing driving can be learned and many insurance companies recognize and reward the effort to learn.

Where To Learn Defensive Driving

Just about any driving school will offer a defensive driving course. In it you will be taught the skills needed to be a defensive driver including; staying focused, paying attention, and being aware of what the other drivers are doing. You can’t depend on someone else to make the right decisions while driving, so it is up to you to be on the defense.

Simply being a safe driver is more than half the battle. Maintaining the speed limit, not driving distracted, following the three- second rule when following someone, and obeying traffic signs can significantly reduce the likelihood that you’ll get into an accident. With distracted driving at an all time high and cell phones mostly to blame, insurance companies are eager to offer discounts to people who have taken the course. There many other things a defensive driving course can teach you. Some schools advertise defensive driving courses online but be wary. Most insurance companies require actual driving as part of the course to qualify for the discount.

The Defensive Driver Discount

Most insurance companies will offer a discount on your policy if you have proof that you have completed a defensive driving course. Some require more documentation than others to proveĀ  that your have taken the course. Each state determines the minimum amount an insurance company can offer for participation in a defensive driving course. The average discount is 10%.
