How Does Car Insurance Work?

Car Insurance Goes Beyond Your Car

Webster’s Dictionary defines insurance as “a means of guaranteeing protection or safety.” So, put simply, car insurance is a means of protecting your car. However, the protection offered by car insurance extends beyond your car. Depending on the type of policy you have, car insurance can offer a measure of protection in many different situations where your vehicle is involved.

Payments And Risk Value

Car insurance works like this: you pay a predetermined bi-yearly (or monthly) premium based on what type of policy you purchase and the car insurance company insures your vehicle, depending on the policy, for a certain amount. For example, an insurance company will insure your car for a certain amount based on the value of the car; in turn you pay a premium based on your risk value. Your risk value is a calculated risk assessment that determines how likely you are to be in an accident.

The premiums are determined by several factors; age, previous driving record, value of the vehicle being insured and what type of insurance you want on the car. Drivers under the age of twenty-one pay higher premiums because they are at a higher risk for accidents. Likewise, drivers over the age of sixty-five also pay a higher premium. Your driving record also plays a huge role in the premium amount. If you are a safe driver you will pay a lower premium because your risk is low. The possibility of you getting into an accident is low so your premium is low.

Several Types

There are several types of car insurance available and each plan comes with a different type of coverage. The most basic car insurance is a liability plan, which only covers the other driver’s car and medical expenses if you are at fault in an accident. It does not cover your vehicle or medical expenses. The type of car you drive also affects how much you will pay and how much coverage you will need. If you drive a higher-end car then you will need more insurance at a higher premium.
