Each State May Be Different

Each state has a different requirement for the minimum allowable car insurance. Alaska has the most stringent car insurance requirements of any other state. Alaska requires each driver to carry $100,000 per accident, $50,000 per person and $25,000 for property damage.

Florida is one of three states that do not require motorists to purchase bodily injury liability insurance, which means they only require enough insurance to cover the cost of the other driver’s car if you are in an accident. There are fourteen states that are “no fault” states. This includes; Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, District of Columbia, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, Pennsylvania, and North Dakota.

No-Fault Car Insurance

“No fault” is a broad term describing laws that have passed requiring the insurance companies of the drivers involved in an accident to pay for their own damage and limits the possibility of a lawsuit regardless of who is at fault in an accident. Drivers who only carry liability insurance would be most affected by their state’s “no fault” status. Even if another driver were completely at fault in an accident then you would still be responsible for the damage to your vehicle and any medical expenses following the accident for you and your passengers.

This is an enormous risk to take given the circumstances of driving in today’s society. With the wide use of cell phones and text messaging, driving is an even more dangerous venture than ever. If you live in one of these fourteen states, then purchasing more insurance than just liability is a good idea.

Other Factors

Other factors play a roll in how much car insurance you need. The type of car you drive and how far you have to commute to work could all play a roll in how much insurance you should purchase. If you have a long commute then purchasing a policy with more coverage would be a good investment in the long run.
