Is My Car Covered When Someone Else Drives My Car?

By Mike Anderson Posted in Car Insurance News

So your friend asks to burrow your car for the weekend, and you are wondering what, if any, car insurance coverage is in place when you lend your car to someone? The precise answer to his question is it depends on the car insurance policy of the car’s owner. Different insurance policies offer different coverage for situations like this one. Many insurance plans will cover your car when it is being driven by someone else, but there are circumstances that require additional measures to be taken in order to have your car insured.

Certain Criteria Must Be Met In Order For Someone Other Than Yourself To Be Covered While Driving Your Car

The most important factor determining if your car is covered is if the individual who is driving it has permission from the insurance policyholder to be operating it. Also, if the individual who you lent your car to lives in the same household as you, he or she must be added as a secondary driver on the car insurance policy in order to be fully insured while driving it. If lending your car to an individual is a rare occasion there should not be a problem, but if that person drives your car on a regular basis he or she must also be added on to your car insurance policy as a secondary driver in order to be covered.

No Every Car Insurance Policy Offers Coverage To Individuals Not Listed As Drivers In The Policy

If your car is being driven by someone other then those listed on your car insurance policy they must have permission to be driving the car, they must not live in the same household as you, and they must not drive the car on a regular basis. Even if the individual driving your car meets all of the criteria he or she will not be covered if your insurance policy does not state that individuals not listed as drivers on the policy are covered. You can find out this information in the underwriting guidelines of your insurance policy.
