New Minimum California State Requirements For San Jose Car Insurance

With almost 23 million licensed drivers, California has more cars on the road than any other state in America. With that many people driving on California’s highways, it was imperative that the State set up insurance policies that both protected drivers and stayed affordable. Here’s what California’s latest insurance requirements looks like for its motorists.

Bad News For The Uninsured

The latest change to California car insurance law was to close a loop hole that let uninsured drivers go unnoticed. Before police officers could only check a driver’s insurance by the paperwork the driver provided, which may have been from a canceled policy or fraudulent. As of 2006 officers can now check electronically to see if the motorist’s policy is up to date. The law also provides swift justice for the uninsured, usually resulting in a hefty fine and eventually a suspended license.

The Latest Requirements For Californians

At minimum California drivers are required to carry liability insurance, which covers the other driver in the event of an accident. The state uses a tort system, meaning the driver at fault takes full responsibility for providing compensation for the victim. Any damages the faulty driver incurs will have to be payed out of their own pocket if they don’t have an additional comprehensive or collision plan. The minimum liability for California drivers include 15,000 dollars for medical expenses of one person. If there are more than one person in the other car involved then the policy must cover 30,000 of combined expenses for the party. The minimum for property damages is 5,000 dollars. These numbers should come as a relief to California drivers as they are some of the lowest in the country, which should result in cheaper rates for the motorist. Motorists are still encouraged to have additional coverage to better protect themselves in an accident.
