New Minimum Louisiana State Requirements For Baton Rouge Car Insurance

By Mike Anderson Posted in Car Insurance News

Last January, the state of Louisiana made some significant changes to their drivers’ car insurance requirements, and for Baton Rouge car insurance policy holders, this could mean big changes in their plan and their rates. The biggest change is the increase of minimum liability that each driver is required to carry. Here are a few things Baton Rouge car insurance policy holders should keep in mind when updating their policy.

The Latest Changes

Louisiana car insurance law uses a tort system, meaning that in an accident, the person at fault is responsible for covering the other person’s damages. At minimum, drivers are required to carry a liability insurance policy. Though it doesn’t cover an of your own expenses, it will cover the other driver’s damages if you are at fault. Up until 2010 Louisiana had one of the lowest minimum liability policies in the country, but now these requirements have increased by as much as 25%. A driver’s liability policy must cover at least 15,000 dollars for a single driver’s medical expenses and a combined 30,000 dollars of expenses if there are multiple people in the victim’s car. The policy must also provide at least 25,000 for any property damage expenses the victim may incur from the accident.

A Little Extra

The minimum liability coverage will legally keep you on the road, but if you’re in accident it may not be for long. If you’re ever at fault and have no collision coverage then all medical expenses or repair costs will have to come out your own pocket. Though it’s not required, a comprehensive collision plan will protect you from financial stress in the long run. Another plan that isn’t required but is suggested is uninsured motorist insurance. This protects you in the event of a hit and run or if the other driver in the accident is uninsured.
