New Minimum State Requirements For Los Angeles Car Insurance
By Patrick Cooper Posted in Car Insurance News
Los Angeles, California is the second biggest city in the United States. It’s population is as diverse as the number of activities to do out here. But with a large population comes a massive number of voters, and all people planning to get themselves driving out in Los Angeles need to be aware of laws that are on the books that crack down on insurance cheats.
How Much Insurance Is Required
The state minimum is referred to in the industry as 15/30/5. This is a standard auto industry term and what it means is $15,000/$30,000/$5,000. The numbers refer to that one person could be paid up to $15,000 for personal injury, $30,000 personal injury per accident, and $5,000 for property damage. This actually is lower than most other states, but the penalties for not having insurance are stiff, and with new laws, many old loopholes have been closed.
What Are Some New Laws
There used to be technical loopholes where a person could buy insurance to get cards for six months at a time, then they wouldn’t pay the premiums and as long as you showed the police your card, they believed that you had insurance. Starting in 2006, however, police can electronically check with the DMV to see if you have insurance. Being caught with no insurance can lead to your vehicle being impounded. Also, the DMV will be notified immediately if your insurance is cancelled for any reason, including non-payment. The DMV has the authority to revoke your registration at that point because you are considered uninsured. In addition, uninsured motorists may, at the police’s discretion, have their cars impounded. Insurance may be expensive to have, but it’s more expensive not to have.
