2007 Auto Pricing Report Info
According to the “2007 Auto Pricing Report,” the most expensive state to insure a vehicle in is Louisiana. The average car insurance premium in Louisiana is $2,708. New York and New Jersey are close behind with an average premium of $2,566 and $2,559 respectively. The least expensive state to insure a car in is Ohio with an average premium of $1,301.
Several Factors
There are several factors that make Louisiana the most expensive state to purchase car insurance in. Louisiana has the highest instance of drunk drivers than any other state (and drive-through liquor stores) and a more lax culture when it comes to drinking. Louisiana also has some of the worst roads in the country and is home to some of the wettest cities (four out of the top ten). All these factors create a perfect storm to produce high premiums for all the drivers.
Alaska carries the distinction of having the strictest car insurance requirements of any state. Alaska requires all drivers to have $50,000 per driver, $25,000 for property damage and $100,000 per accident. Drivers caught in Alaska without insurance could have their license suspended for up to a year.
Suspension Policies
Maine follows close behind but has a stricter suspension policy and higher fines. While Arizona requires a lower amount of coverage, they require visiting drivers to be insured under an Arizona licensed insurance company. Connecticut requires drivers to send proof of insurance when their policy lapses or they could risk a $200 fine. Incidentally, the states with the strictest car insurance requirements are not the most expensive states to insure a car. Since Alaska is not one of the contiguous states, data regarding the premium pricing is not available for comparison.
