Which Cars Are The Lowest Cost To Insure?

By Mike Anderson Posted in Car Insurance News

There are many factors that car insurance companies take into account when determining how much a car insurance policy’s premiums will cost. Included in these are the assessed driving ┬árisk of the policy holder, the area in which he or she lives, and of course what type of car he or she drives. The type of car that you drive can substantially affect the amount you pay in insurance premiums.

Expensive Sports Cars Are Among The Most Costly To Insure

Cars that will attract the highest car insurance premiums are those that are often involved in accidents. For the most part this means that sports cars have much higher premiums than others. Claims history of a given car model, curb weight, horsepower, and price all go into the equation when insurance companies calculate policy premiums. In 2009 the popular $75,000 Nissan GT-R sports car weighed in with the highest average insurance premiums. Also, cars that are more likely to be stolen carry higher premiums. This is especially the case when the car is registered in a urban area, and once again sports cars top this list.

Cars With Good Safety Features And A Low Probability Of Being Stolen Will Have Lower Premium Costs

So what types of cars are the cheapest to insure? Less expensive cars that perform well in collisions and are unlikely to be stolen are among those that will have the lowest car insurance premiums. For instance, a car with a moderate amount of horsepower, multiple airbags, antilock breaking system, and other safety features is considered to be a lower collision and bodily injury risk to insurance companies and therefore have lower policy premiums. By taking these factors into account, minivans are among the vehicle types that will cost the least to insure on average. It may come as a surprise but the Smart FourTwo is actually one of the cheapest cars to insure. This tiny 71 horsepower vehicle comes equipped with some pretty impressive safety features allowing it to be considered low risk by insurance companies. And, the car car that has the lowest average car insurance premiums is the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe.

If shopping for a car that carries a low car insurance premium, your typical small sedan or minivan with great safety features is going to be your best bet.
