Who Offers A Good Student Driver Discount?

By Sharon Gibson Posted in Car Insurance News

Car insurance companies conduct substantial research in order to help them calculate accurate premiums to charge their policyholders. Insurers categorize different drivers into different levels of risk based on how probable they are to make insurance claims to the car insurance company. Drivers who are seen as high risk drivers are much more likely to file claims and therefore collect insurance money. In order to offset this loss of money auto insurance companies will charge high risk drivers higher insurance premiums.

Teenage Drivers Are Among The Highest Risk Demographic

Teenage drivers are by far one of the most risky types of drivers for car insurance companies to take on as clients. There is substantial evidence that shows that new inexperienced drivers are far more likely to be involved in a traffic accident than older more experienced drivers. Therefor, teenage drivers are the most expensive driver demographic to purchase auto insurance for.

Good Students Are Lower Risk And Can Therefore Qualify For Good Student Discounts

Studies conduced for auto insurance companies have found that student drivers who receive good grades are actually less likely to be involved in a traffic accident than teenage drivers with poor grades. Students who receive good grades are typically more responsible and are therefore less likely to be involved in risky driving behavior. Since these teenage drivers have a lower likelihood of filing claims with their car insurance, many insurers will recognize that they are lower risk clients. For that reason many insurance companies will offer good student discounts. These discounts can be up to fifteen percent off insurance premiums for students who receive a B or better average in school.

Not all car insurance companies offer good student discounts, however most big name insurers do have these deals. Allstate, State Farm, Geico, and Esurance are all among the major insurers that offer good student discounts. When purchasing an insurance policy for a teenage driver be sure to find out if the insurance company that you are buying from offers good student discounts, and what qualifications and documentation are needed to receive the discount.
