For many families the rising cost of health care are unaffordable and make them choose between paying the mortgage or their health insurance premiums. Luckily, there are several ways a family can dramatically lower their health insurance costs.

Get A New Job

One way to lower your family’s health insurance costs is by getting a new job. If you are self-employed or employed by a small company, you are most likely paying much more for health insurance than someone who works for a large corporation. Large corporations almost always offer better coverage and lower rates because they benefit from having such a large employee base in one plan. The more people that are in a plan, the less risk there is for the insurer and therefore overall costs are lowered for the insured.

Switch Insurance Plans

Another way to lower your family’s health insurance costs is by switching insurance plans. While many people enjoy having a PPO health insurance plan which allows them to visit any doctor, they pay much more for insurance than may be needed. By selecting a HMO, which requires you to select a doctor from a network, you could save thousands of dollars in insurance premiums each year. Furthermore, HMO networks are fairly large and there is a good chance your current physician may be in it.

Change Lifestyle Behaviors

Another way to lower your family’s health insurance costs is by changing your lifestyle behaviors. Health insurance providers tend to charge more in insurance premiums for people who are overweight or engage in unhealthy reckless behavior, such as smoking or taking recreational drugs. By eliminating these behaviors, you could save a significant amount of money on health insurance premiums.
