Getting a health insurance cover when you are employed is quite easy. Most times your employer may even offer some form of coverage. However, the case is quite different when you are unemployed. Having a health insurance is quite important, being unemployed should not prevent you from getting a health insurance cover. Here are some options to consider.

Gather Information

You may be amazed what can be achieved with a little information gathering. You need to find out and consider all available options for getting a health cover. The internet is a good place to begin. You can also contact the unemployment office in your locality. You can also search out for cheap individual health cover, which are available in some states. You can also ask a health insurance agent for options. Based on the coverage policy of your state, you may qualify for a continuation of your health insurance cover based on your last job.

COBRA

COBRA stands for Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. This a federal provision that allows employees as well as their dependants to continue to receive health coverage based on an employer’s health group plan even after being unemployed. If you have been laid off this may be one way to access health insurance.

HIPAA

HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This is another law or provision enacted in 1996, which allows unemployed individuals who have lost group coverage to receive insurance cover. It has its own way of charging premiums and provides cover for at least two policies without imposing an exclusion period for existing medical condition. To qualify you must have had COBRA for at least 18 months

Check Out Medicaid

Disabled seniors above 65 who are unemployed may qualify for Medicaid. Pregnant women who are out of work can also apply for Medicaid. Medicaid is organized and run by the government and offers very cheap insurance. You can simply contact Medicaid directly.
