Why Won’t State-Run Health Insurance Versus Fed’s Work?

What Is The Proposal

One of the newer proposal to hit the health care debate proposed a state-run health care option. Senator Tom Carper has laid out the new proposal that places the public option for health care in the hands of the individual states with federal support. This plan would give the private insurance companies more competition at the state level.

How It Works

The states would have a series of state-run health care cooperatives, with a 6 billion dollar boost from the federal government, that would give the private insurance companies a run for their money. The purpose of this type of plan is to attempt to control the outrageous private insurance premiums by giving the public an affordable public option. Instead of the private insurance companies monopolizing the field, the state health insurance would even the playing field for all Americans.

The states would be bound by the same restrictions that the private insurance companies currently face. Another incarnation of this bill would allow the state to open its employees’ health insurance plans to the general public. So the same insurance plan available to a state employee would be available to the general public.

Why This Could Be A Good Thing

Senator Carper’s proposal is gaining momentum in the senate as both sides clamor to find a solution. The bill is the most promising option so far and has some Republicans and Democrats on the same side for a change. The naysayers claim that a government run health care system, in any carnation, would be detrimental to the free market health care in America today. Like most everything in America, the health care system is run by capitalists. While there are definite benefits to this type of system, access to great doctors and medical care easy to obtain, the cost for the average American can be staggering.

The average health care plan for a family of four can cost almost one thousand dollars a month. Some medications can cost that much alone for a one month supply. Republicans fear a system where the government decides who is eligible for care and who is not but our current system weeds people out who can’t afford the treatment. Essentially doing to one thing some senate leaders fear most.
